Breast Biopsy and Surgery

Breast biopsies are performed when a part or all of a suspicious growth is removed and examined, usually for the presence of cancer. The growth sample is suctioned out through a needle or cut out using a surgical procedure. The sample is then evaluated under a microscope by a pathologist to identify non-cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant) tissue. Many times, surgery can be part of the treatment process for breast cancer. ALMH offers you a compassionate and highly skilled surgical team that is ready to provide you with the best care possible.

3D Digital Mammography

Safe and highly effective, digital mammograms are the most important tool doctors use to diagnose breast cancer. They are used as both an early detection tool for women experiencing no symptoms and a diagnostic tool for women experiencing symptoms such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge.

Obstetrical Ultrasound

Obstetrical ultrasounds can be used to look at the fetus, placenta and uterus. Ultrasounds of the fetus can determine such things as: number of fetuses, age of fetus, fetal position and how the fetus is growing. It can also help determine the gender (sex) of the fetus. Ultrasounds are also used to detect some possible birth defects.

Some common procedures performed at ALMH include:

Endometrial ablation

This is a procedure used to treat abnormal uterine bleeding. During an endometrial ablation, the lining tissues of the uterus are destroyed. Ablation is an outpatient procedure.

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus. It is the most common non-obstetrical surgical procedure in women in the United States. Hysterectomy is performed for a variety of reasons including uterine fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, cervical dysplasia and endometriosis. A hysterectomy can also be performed to treat uterine or endometrial cancer. Women undergoing hysterectomy can expect to spend approximately 3 days as an inpatient at ALMH during recovery.

Using a laparoscope, this type of surgery allows smaller incisions and faster recovery times. At Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, this procedure is often used as a diagnostic tool to allow the physician to assess without making a large incision. The procedure is also commonly used to remove cysts, ovaries; assist with vaginal hysterectomies; and sterilization.
